Butoh with Stefano Taiuti

  • Daruma Berlin Germany (map)

We are happy to present a new workshop and performance series exploring the enigmatic art of Butoh with Stefano Taiuti. These workshops will run monthly at Daruma, and will each be accompanied by a performance piece. As Butoh is a practice that takes some time to discover and understand we hope that we can build a group of regular participants over the course of the year, maybe even leading eventually to some creative group projects utilising Butoh (and perhaps shibari).

About the Workshop

Stefano Taiuti is a performance artist, Butoh dancer and body worker.

Throughout over 30 years Stefano explored the body in motion as an expressive tool, studying with internationally renowned Mime teachers and Butoh masters and thus developing his own methodology. “The Spiritual Mechanism” is a unique approach to dance and self discovery that integrates western movement analyses focusing on the visible, and Butoh to explore the invisible, the subtle, what is behind the movement and generates it.

Performance: Corpo d’acqua / Still Water

After this workshop on Saturday evening, Stefano will present a performance Corpo d'acqua (English Title: Still Water). Doors open at 7.30pm, and the performance will be followed by a Q&A session. Tickets for the performance are included in the weekend workshop tickets, or can be purchased separately.

  • Butoh, (in)famously, defies description. It it often reduced only to an examination of the striking imagery it sometimes produces (grotesque contortions, stark white make-up etc.), but the heart of Butoh is in the process. Butoh presents an exploratory series of tools for finding the body, and learning to be in control of losing control. It is a practice that, fundamentally, asks us to fully confront ourselves as inseperable from our ailing bodies and the universe they bleed and dissolve into.

  • Anyone and everyone. You don’t need any dance experience, nor do you need any particular level of physical fitness, flexibility, or strength to participate.

However, the workshop will include elements of physical training such as stretching & conditioning, as well as movement exploration and dance by internal landscapes.
