The Atmosphere of Rope // An Expansive Space for Shibari Play

This two-day workshop series, taught by hua hua, offers two distinct explorations:

Day 1: The Atmosphere of Rope // Day 2:  An Expansive Space for Shibari Play

Each workshop session runs from 10am until 6pm, including breaks. While both days can be booked individually, we highly recommend taking advantage of the discounted offer for booking them together, allowing for a comprehensive and immersive experience.

Day 1: The Atmosphere of Rope

What drew me to Shibari initially was the headspace that could be created with only rope and our presence. I was fascinated by the natural high that ropes could create. However, although many share this fascination, often workshops and performances tend to showcase more of the physical attributes rather than the more subtle psychological realm. In this workshop we will be focusing purely on the energetic exchange between the one tying and one tied. The aim is to understand how rope handling, body language and non-verbal communication can enliven the experience of rope bondage. We will begin with an Ipponnawa practice, using minimal rope to allow the model’s reactions to dictate the progression rather than a pattern. In the afternoon we will then look at how to build a scene with more ropes. We will be exploring how observation, timing and tension can be applied with intention to deepen the model’s mental states. Students have the option to use suspension when practising if it is within their skill level.

Prerequisites for Day 1: Single and double column ties, fluency with basic frictions, basic uplines (for those who wish to suspend, although this is not mandatory).

Day 2: An Expansive Space for Shibari Play

We often see Shibari practised with only a hard point from above and the play happening directly underneath this hard point. In this workshop we will be exploring how to expand the space of the tie utilising side points from the side and multiple suspension points to create more of a 3D composition and explore space. The class will begin with a floorplay concept that I like to call ‘Flat Suspension’ which utilises side points to create the same intensity of suspension without needing to leave the floor. In the afternoon we will be exploring how to use multiple suspension points to create playful transitions with suspension, that can break the monotony of typical suspension positions.

Prerequisites for Day 2: Experience with suspension, fluency with uplines, and experience with suspendible harnesses.

  • To ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants, certain prerequisites must be met. In addition to the specific prerequisites for each day above, all participants must have effective communication skills with their partners. Individuals being tied should be familiar with their body in ropes, including the ability to recognise nerve and circulatory issues, and (for Day 2), have prior experience with suspensions. It is essential for both partners to engage in a thorough pre-negotiation, openly discussing any physical or psychological limitations, injuries, or concerns that may impact the ties.

  • Switching between partners during the workshop is welcome, although it's important to note that it will result in less time for each participant to practice the tie. We recommend only switching at the start of a new exercise, rather than within the same exercise.
