Explore innovative ways you can play with self-suspension on a single point to create possibilities for movement and dynamic transitions.

This workshop will explore innovative ways you can play with self-suspension on a single point to create possibilities for movement and dynamic transitions. The workshop will focus on getting creative in the air, and will show you a range of suspension shapes you can play with and adapt according to your unique style. Burgundy Rose is a trained circus performer, and will also show techniques for creating and controlling spinning in the air for those that are interested in understanding and/or integrating this into their repertoire.

Prerequisites: You should be comfortable managing uplines and should already know some suspendable harnesses.

What to bring: At least 6-8 hanks of rope, safety shears and a swivel if you have one.

Note: Self-suspension is demanding on the body and energy levels so please eat a good brunch before arriving and have light snacks throughout the day. If you can bring some ginger (in a drink or a snack), this can help with dizziness from spinning.

Who is teaching this class?

Burgundy Rose

Burgundy Rose is a multidisciplinary artist and is passionate about using the body as a tool for expression. They are interested in exploring the boundaries of theatre, movement, rope and circus, and how these art forms can inspire each other. Burgundy Rose has been making performance work for over a decade, and has worked on projects spanning from theatre productions and international residencies, to short acts for festivals, clubs and cabaret nights.

Burgundy Rose found Shibari through the BDSM scene, and started learning in 2016 at Anatomie Studio in London. They have since learnt from an extensive range of international educators and collaborators, and are currently most inspired by blending the intensity and aesthetics of ‘traditional’ Japanese Shibari with a more movement-based and deconstructed ‘contemporary’ style. They tie others, get tied and self-tie.

Burgundy Rose has trained with Jasmin Vardimon Dance Theatre Company (JVI Intensive) and on Circomedia’s degree programme in Circus Arts. In 2019 they were awarded a ‘Developing Your Creative Practice’ grant from Arts Council England to spend a period of time exploring rope, dance and physical theatre. They are currently making a solo show that weaves together autobiographical storytelling with rope and aerial hoop.

Their rope teaching and creative performances have taken them across London, Manchester, Bristol, Berlin, Barcelona, Prague, Athens, and Portland (USA).
