Shibari Classes for Beginners (Step 1 & 2)

  • Daruma Neukölln, Berlin (map)

Our 6 week courses for shibari beginners run every Tuesday from our studio in Neukölln, Berlin. Both levels are taught in English by one of our regular in-house teachers.

The goal of these classes is to facilitate regular, structured shibari practice, that aims to go deep rather than broad, helping you to develop a really firm grasp of rope bondage basics, build muscle memory, and get to know other participants.

This time (7/1 - 11/2) the courses will be led by Ena!

Absolute Beginners (Step 1)

Step 1 is for those who are either completely new to shibari, or have a little prior experience but are feeling a bit rusty on the basics. The course covers simple knots, frictions, patterns, harnesses, and introduces participants to important skills such as rope handling and tensioning. By the end of the course, participants should understand how to construct a short rope scene that brings together technical and playful elements.

  • None. This course is suitable for people who have never tried shibari before!

Beginners (Step 2)

Step 2 builds on the content of the Step 1 course, deepening and expanding on what you’ve already learnt. By the end of the course, participants should have a wider range of technical elements in their rope tool kits, a deeper understanding of common safety issues, and should be able to construct a range of floor ties, and use them in play.

  • Participants should already be familiar with all of the content in the step 1 course. If you have learnt the basics of shibari elsewhere you are welcome to join step 2. You should already be familiar with tying some simple harnesses that use the folllowing elements:

single column tie, straight and counter tensioned wrapping, basic frictions: nodome, half hitch, x-friction, half moon friction, kannuki/cinch, double column tie, larkshead (joining ropes)

You should also have a basic understanding of how to check for nerve issues, how to control your tension and how to handle your rope efficiently.

If you are unsure whether or not you have the level for this course, please feel free to contact us.

Further Information

  • Both courses have a set curriculum each week, which means that if life gets in the way and you have to miss a week you are free to drop in to the week you missed during the next course at no extra cost. Just drop us a message in advance to let us know you are coming!

  • You are welcome to come alone or partnered. Participants who come alone are encouraged to partner up with another solo-participant to practice the ties on each other. If you don’t want to switch (both tie and be tied), then we would recommend coming with a partner.

  • You don’t need to bring your own rope as ropes will be available at the studio to borrow or buy!

When? Tuesday evenings: Step 1 6pm-8pm and Step 2 8.15pm-10.15pm.

Dates: The next course will take place from 12th November - 17th December 2024, and will be led by Shirin. Future courses will start on: 7th January 2025, 18th February 2025, 1st April 2025, 13th May 2025, 8th July 2025, 19th August 2025, 30th September 2025, 11th November 2025.
